Go for a walk

I recently wrote a guest post for Prevent Breast Cancer about my 3 favourite Sunday Strolls in Manchester and it got me thinking about how important walking can be for health and mindset as it is often neglected. Walking is one of the most underrated forms of exercise mainly because it isn't seen as exercise ... but there are so many benefits you can gain from just simply walking more

1/ It helps create a healthier body

Walking just 30 minutes a day will help strengthen your heart, keep your joints and muscles active, lowers the risk of chronic illnesses and can aid with weight loss if needed. There is an obesity epidemic in the world and if everyone just walked more there would be positive health changes made.

You can incorporate it in to your daily routine as well even if it doesn't seem like a lot some small changes may help such as getting off the bus 2 stops early or setting off earlier so you don't need to get that taxi. Think before you get in the car ... could you walk there instead? Yes it might take a bit longer but chances are its doable. Then when you have more time you can take yourself on longer more intense walks.

2/ It gives you time outdoors

You get to explore your local surroundings and see new places. The best way to learn about where you live or where you are visiting is to walk around and see what you can find. Half the time you won't even be thinking about it as exercise but next time you are out and about make more of a conscious effort to walk. It also gets you outdoors especially this time of year to soak up some Vitamin D - hello sunshine!

3/ It gives you time to think

Feeling stressed? Unmotivated? Overwhelmed or Emotional ? Get yourself on a walk to have some time to yourself. I always find walking gives me time to think things over and come to an understanding. It doesn't always work but it is a good place to start practising mindfulness and you can even get apps such as HeadSpace or Calm that can help as well.

Walking can be done alone or with friends and family.

It is free and accessible to everyone.

You can work it into your daily routine

It can be fun :)

Don't under estimate the power of walking.
