For those of you who know me will know how I don't take compliments very well ... in fact I'm rubbish at accepting them. I brush them off with a quick thank you and change the subject and I think that comes down to the fact that I am not very confident within my body. I never used to have this problem and it's only recently that I am starting to get my confidence back and be proud of me !
One of the main reasons why I developed my disordered way of eating 6 years ago was because I didn't like what I saw in the mirror and wanted it to change. No matter what people said I couldn't get past the fact I looked fat, ugly, plain ... anything but good. I didn't see what they saw and couldn't understand what they were on about. This is a type of Body Dysmophia.
Body Dysmophia is clinically defined as an 'anxiety disorder that causes a person to have a distorted view of how they look and to spend a lot of time worrying about their appearance' NHS
The person will believe that they are ugly or deffective and think others do too. It can range in severity and can lead onto eating and/or behavioral disorders. This is not to say everyone that worrys about how they look has it or will become anorexic but it does exsist and people need to be aware of this.
I would like to say I have managed to overcome this but I haven't ... however I am getting better and it is only recently I am starting to feel more confident in how I look. It can be hard sometimes and esspecially within the industry I work in as there is a pressure to look a certain way - people judge my training skills on how I look. They shouldn't but as a society we do and it's a shame. But in order to help others feel better and more confident within themselves I have to be able to do the same.
Is this something you can relate to ? Do you worry about how you look obsesively ? Don't believe when people say you look good ?
If so remember this:
Looks don't define who you are you are much more than that! Focus on everything you have in your life - family, friends, support network, work, achivements, health and happiness and let that be your confidence.
Don't let anyone including yourself ever let you feel crap about how you look! If there are people in your life that do this then break ties - there is no need for negativity like that. We should support each other not tear each other down.
Listen to the positive things people around you are saying especially your loved ones as they tend to tell the truth :)
Aim for happiness in all aspects of your life.
Yes you may be on a journey to reach a certain goal that will change your body but make sure you are doing it because you want to for the right reasons !
Make sure that before you work on your physical self you have worked on your state of mind - it is only when that is healthy and in a good place can you truly be
